Today in History:

American Civil War Wax Museum & Gettysburg Gift Center

Gettysburg, PA – The American Civil War (Wax) Museum and Gettysburg Gift Center have been a staple in the Gettysburg Community for nearly 50 years! As the Civil War sesquicentennial approaches, and more people travel to Battlefields, learn what the American Civil War Museum has to offer visitors to Gettysburg!

The doors to the American Civil War (Wax) Museum were opened in April 1962, the 100th anniversary of the War Between the States.  Throughout the years, the museum and gift shop have grown and developed into one the largest, and most notable destinations in Gettysburg.

The museum itself has undergone minor changes, except for technological advances, preserving the original purpose of the developers.  It is one of the few museums in Gettysburg to recount significant events throughout the turbulent Civil War.  Over 35 vignettes recreate specific events and personalities from pre-war times, until Lincoln’s assassination at Ford’s Theater.  The final exhibit in the museum is the “Battle Room”, a digitally enhanced audio-visual presentation.  Visitors experience the three-day battle of Gettysburg, including the recreation of Pickett’s charge utilizing life-sized wax figures.  The program’s finale concludes with an animated President Lincoln delivering the immortal Gettysburg Address.

The Gettysburg Gift Center, located in the lobby of the museum, offers one of the largest selections of souvenirs, apparel, books, art, collectibles, games and toys, replica weapons, and so much more! The gift shop not only offers a vast selection, but it prides itself in giving visitors quality products at incredible prices! In addition, more that 50 % of the products the Gettysburg Gift Center carries are made in the USA! Of those many are made in Pennsylvania!

Customers who want to shop from home are in luck! Patrons may shop from the comforts of their home via a complimentary, full color catalog or online at www.GettysburgMuseum.com!

Over the years, the museum has grown to include complimentary Living History Encampments most weekends.  From April through November, visitors can actively learn about the life of a Civil War soldier by strolling through the camps, view drills and demonstrations, and engage in conversation with the living historians.  Units vary throughout the year, so be sure to stop by frequently for a new and different experience.

The American Civil War Museum has been actively developing new programming for individuals and groups alike.  Over the past year, interactive programs have been implemented, which allow guests to be a part of history.  Although there are several to choose from, the most popular by far is the Enlist Now! Program; one which teaches the “new recruits” different aspects to being a Civil War soldier - what camp was like and how to march.  The interactive programs are suitable for any age!
