An escaped slave was the 'Florence Nightingale’ of Indiana's Civil War regiment
Lucy Higgs Nichols went from a life of slavery to beloved, "Aunt Lucy" Civil War nurse, and dedicated her life to serving others by choice. As reported by the Louisville Courier-Journal Feb. 4, 1889, “Nichols was sometimes at the rear, sometimes in the front and often in the thickest of the battle, as much a soldier as her male companions, except that she did not carry arms. She never received a scratch.” Read more about the amazing Lucy Higgs Nichols at the Carnegie Center for Art & History
