1860 Census
The 1860 was completed just prior to the start of the war and provides us with the most complete breakdown of the population and occupations of the free and slave holding states, as well as the size of the population centers and counties. Other interesting facts in the census include the number of churches and their denominations. A cross tabulation of denomination representation in a county with number of volunteers, as an overall percentage of the male service age population, may indicate a sentiment within a particular denomination, for instance.
