While Founders Day was a high point, there are many more centennial
events, activities, and programs to come through the end of 2016!

Centennial Celebrations Across the Land

NEW TRIBAL HOUSE IN ALASKA

Hundreds of Huna Tlingit tribal members, NPS staff, visitors, and
friends gathered for the completion of a long-awaited dream -- the grand
opening of the Huna Tribal House at Glacier Bay National Park and
Preserve. The live-streamed event included a canoe landing, a
purification ceremony, and traditional song and dance.

WELCOMING NEW CITIZENS

Grand Canyon National Park kicked off its centennial activities
with a naturalization ceremony for 15 new U.S. citizens representing 12
countries. In honor of the NPS Centennial, U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services has partnered with the NPS to hold more than 100
naturalization ceremonies on national park sites during 2016.

AN ASTRONAUTICAL CELEBRATION

Mississippi National River and Recreation Area pulled out all the
stops for the centennial: a visit from Department of Interior
Secretary Sally Jewell, who talked with the International Space Station
from the remodeled visitor center; an Outdoor Afro canoe excursion;
and the launch of the first-ever Mississippi River kayak share stations.

100 YEARS OF NATURE IN 10 DAYS

The Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate marked the
centennial with a #10decadesin10days social media blitz. For 10
days leading up to Founders Day, NRSS posted photos and fun facts about
the history of the National Park Service through the lens of natural
resources. As a centennial capstone, NPS reached its goal of over
100,000 observations on iNaturalist for the nationwide BioBlitz project!

FEAST TO THE BEAT

Feast to the Beat - a celebration of the NPS Centennial with music
and food that speaks to our cultural roots and highlights national
heritage areas - rolled through the Ohio & Erie Canalway and the
Blue Ridge Parkway National Heritage Areas, as well as Channel
Islands National Park, on its summer road tour. Local chefs
prepared regional cuisines while area bands performed and recorded.

From Coast-to-Coast and Territories Too!

COMPLETING THE CIRCUIT

The Find Your Park Exchange event [26] series culminated in New York
City, bringing the innovation of Thomas Edison National Historical Park
 in a small New Jersey town to the iconic big city skyline. NPS
sites across the country joined the party using Facebook Live to
complete a "Virtual Park Circuit" one park at a time.

COMING UP ROSIES

Just a week before the NPS Centennial, 2,270 men, women, and children
rallied at the Rosie the Riveter WW II Home Front National Historical
Park to break the world record for the most people dressed as the
iconic poster girl for female empowerment. Several real-life Rosies
described their experiences as industrial workers in WWII.

HONORING TRADITIONS

Virgin Islands National Park celebrated the life and culture of the
people of the Virgin Islands. Island residents and elders gathered at
Annaberg Sugar Mill to share their knowledge of local plant use, knead
traditional dumb bread, and tell stories of growing up in the islands
long before modern conveniences came to the Caribbean.

CENTENNIAL AT THE CONFLUENCE

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park hosted a Centennial
Confluence Festival on August 20 with music and arts where the
Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet. Visitors enjoyed a special day of
music on the Shenandoah shoreline, and kids made a mural and played
games to learn about the history and people of Harpers Ferry and the
greater Appalachian region.

NEW TOOLS FOR NPS STAFF

Two new NPS employee tools made their debut on Founders Day. Designed by
and for employees, the new InsideNPS and the Common Learning Portal
provide the NPS workforce with information and training resources to
support all aspects of the employment experience. Learn more and explore
