Blockade Running Civil War Weekend

The Blockade Runner Beach Resort and the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina are pleased to present a Civil War Weekend dedicated to the Union blockade, Confederate blockade running, and the final Battle of Fort Fisher, the last defense for the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina, the “Lifeline of the Confederacy.” Despite initial challenges the Union faced in implementing the blockade along the Southern coast line, by the war’s end every major Southern port was closed and controlled by Union forces, cutting off Confederate supply lines across the South. The Confederacy’s effort to break the Union blockade was dangerous, as evident by the 82 Civil War shipwrecks along North Carolina’s coast, but successes proved crucial for the Confederacy’s limited survival during the war. The U.S. Navy’s success in the blockade contributed to the Union victory over the rebelling states.
The Blockade Running Civil War Weekend will present lectures by four leading Civil War historians. Dr. Robert Browning is the chief historians of the U.S. Coast Guard, and is the world’s leading scholar of the Union naval blockade. His most recent book is titled Success is All that was Expected: The South Atlantic Blockading Squadron During the Civil War. Dr. Mark Wilde-Ramsing served as the Deputy State Archaeologist of the Underwater Branch North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, and the Queen Anne’s Revenge Project Director, Underwater Archaeology. Dr. Chris Fonvielle, Jr. is a leading historian of Civil War coastal operations, defenses, and blockade running. Among others, he has published two books on North Carolina’s coastal war, The Wilmington Campaign: Last Rays of Departing Hope and Fort Anderson: Battle for Wilmington. Dr. Stephen Wise is the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina museum curator, director and cultural resource manager. He has written and edited Lifeline of the Confederacy: Blockade Running During the Civil War and Gate of Hell: The Campaign for Charleston Harbor 1863. Each speaker will bring a different perspective on the events surrounding the Civil War blockade to this exciting weekend.
