NATIONAL ARCHIVES HOLDS FREE RESEARCH AND GENEALOGY PROGRAMS IN JULY AND AUGUST
Washington, DC. . . In July and August, the National Archives presents research and genealogy programs highlighting records from its holdings. All programs are free and open to the public, and will be held in the National Archives Building Research Center (Room G-25), in Washington, DC. Attendees should use the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. Metro accessible on the Yellow and Green lines, Archives/Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter station.

National Archives 80th Anniversary
Washington, DC. . . On Tuesday, June 24 at noon, the National Archives celebrates its 80th Anniversary with a special film event: From the Vaults: 80th Anniversary of the National Archives. A selection of archival films will be shown including two historic films about the National Archives: Your National Archives (1953) and The Washington Parade: The Archives (1940). (70 minutes.)
The program is free and open to the public and will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. Congress established the National Archives in 1934 to preserve and care for the records of the U.S. Government. Previously, Federal records were kept in various basements, attics, abandoned buildings, and other storage places with little security or concern for storage conditions. In 1935, Archives staff began to survey Federal records and the next year began transferring records to the new National Archives building in Washington, DC. From one building on Pennsylvania Avenue, the National Archives now has more than 40 facilities nationwide.
