Restored and opened to the public in 1977 the historical home of Mary Todd Lincoln became the first historical site dedicated to a First Lady. Purchased by the Todd family in 1832, Mary lived in the residence till she moved to Springfield Illinois with Abraham Lincoln in 1839. The building itself has been restored and contains three floors of historical furnishings. Guided tours are available to the public, and the first floor is handicap accessible. The back or the residence contains a garden, planted as it might have been in the 1800s, as well as several informative plaques. The inner furnishings, either having belonged to the Todd family or historically accurate to the time, are gorgeous and the tour goes over every piece. The museum is open to the public March 15- Nov. 30 on Monday through Saturday, so a few months remain to visit. The trip is well worth it.
