53rd Annual Barondess/Lincoln Award
THE CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE OF NEW YORK PRESENTS THE 53RD ANNUAL
BARONDESS/LINCOLN AWARD TO HAROLD HOLZER FOR HIS BOOK,
“LINCOLN ANDTHE POWER OF THE PRESS”
its 64th year of continuous operations, presented the prestigious
BARONDESS/LINCOLN AWARD to Harold Holzer for his prize winning book,
Lincoln and the Power of the Press.
The 2014 BARONDESS/LINCOLN AWARD was presented at the Round Table’s
587th meeting by Martin A. Smith, Civil War Round Table of New York
President; and Barondess/Lincoln Award Committee Members: Bud
Livingston, Judith Lee Hallock, and Cindy Hochman,.
The BARONDESS/LINCOLN AWARD was first presented in 1962. Dr. Barondess
was a life-long Lincoln Scholar and a distinguished charter and founding
member of the club, along with Bruce Catton, Allan Nevins and Fletcher
Pratt, and this award is presented in his memory. The award in the form
of a bust of Lincoln is given annually “to any person or institution
for any contribution to the greater appreciation of the life and works
of Abraham Lincoln.” Previous distinguished winners have included
James Oakes, Tony Kushner, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Mark Neely, Craig
Symonds, Stephen Oates, Gabor Boritt, William Gienapp, William C. Davis,
Gary Wills, William Safire, Gore Vidal, and Sam Waterston, just to name
a few.
In bestowing this year’s award, Round Table President Martin Smith
praised Holzer’s award-winning book as “a tour de force and a
magnificent achievement” where the author, “arguably surpasses and
overshadows his other great works.” Smith continued, “Harold’s
research is meticulous, and his writing is spellbinding. This book is
truly a masterpiece!“
ABOUT THE RECIPIENT
A prolific writer and lecturer and a frequent guest on television,
Harold Holzer was Co-Chairman of the United States Lincoln Bicentennial
Commission. He has authored or co-authored 47 books on Abraham Lincoln
and the Civil War. Mr. Holzer has won seven Barondess/Lincoln Awards
from the Civil War Round Table of New York; the coveted Nevins-Freeman
Award from the Civil War Round Table of Chicago; and four Awards of
Achievement from The Lincoln Group of New York. Educated at the City
University of New York, he is currently senior vice president for
external affairs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He
and his wife, Edith, live in Rye, New York.
ABOUT THE CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE OF NEW YORK
Founded in 1951, The Civil War Round Table of New York meets on the
second Wednesday of every month from September to June. Round Table
members assist each other with research, discuss preservation strategy
for endangered battlefields, and listen to distinguished speakers talk
about a particular aspect of the American Civil War. Future speakers
this year include author Karen Abbott, Lincoln-scholar Richard Sloan,
the fabulous Frank O’Reilly, and the legendary Ed Bearss. For the
2014-2015 “Sesquicentennial” Season, the Round Table meets at the
wonderful 3 West Club, 3 West 51st Street in Manhattan.
