Dr. Gary Gallagher to offer Keynote at Georgia Historical Society Annual Meeting

Renowned Civil War scholar Gary Gallagher will deliver the Keynote Address at the Georgia Historical Society's 176th Annual Meeting in Savannah on Thursday, May 28, at 6 p.m. at Christ Church on Johnson Square.

Gallagher, the John L. Nau Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia, will discuss "The Civil War in Recent Films: How Hollywood Shapes What We Know," based upon his book, Causes Won, Lost, and Forgotten. Many Americans base their perceptions about our history more on what they see in movies and on television than on what they read.  Gallagher will explore how films like Gone with the Wind, Glory and Cold Mountain have presented—and distorted—the history of the Civil War.

Gallagher books include The Lens of War: Exploring Iconic Photographs of the Civil War, Becoming Confederates: Paths to a New National Loyalty, The Union War, Causes Won, Lost, and Forgotten: How Hollywood and Popular Art Shape What We Know about the Civil War, Lee and His Army in Confederate History, Lee and His Generals in War and Memory, and The Confederate War.

Gallagher has received many awards for his research and writing, including the Tom Watson Brown Book Prize for the best book on the Civil War, presented by the Society of Civil War Historians.

The meeting and lecture are free and open to the public. A reception and book-signing begins at 5 p.m., with reservations required. For more information contact the Georgia Historical Society at (912) 651-2125, ext.114 or visit georgiahistory.com.
