Military History Speaker Series at the Public Library of Cincinnati
Round Table member Albert Hallenberg, who is also a Reference Librarian with the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County, Main Branch Downtown, will be hosting a Military History Speaker Series next month. The focus of this new series will concentrate more on the social history of three wars: Vietnam, the Franco-Prussian War and the Civil War examining the devastating effects of these very different conflicts beyond which side won or lost, in particular the plight of civilians caught in the crossfire.

“The Vietnam War: Myths & Realities”
Saturday, November 5, 2016, 2:00 p.m.
Dr. Jeffrey Williams, Professor Emeritus of History, Northern Kentucky University.
Dr. Williams will discuss popular myths surrounding the Vietnam War, including media coverage of the conflict, the anti-war movement, the treatment of returning veterans and the lingering POW/MIA issue.“The Siege of Strasbourg”
Saturday, November 12, 2016, 2:00 p.m.
Dr. Rachel Chrastil, Associate Professor of History, Xavier University.
Using material from her 2014 book, The Siege of Strasbourg, Dr. Chrastil will discuss an often neglected study in military conflicts: the mistreatment of civilians, in this case with the 1870’s Franco-Prussian War, where for the first time such atrocities gained international attention.“War of Another Kind”
Saturday, November 19, 2016, 2:00 p.m.
Dr. Wayne Durrill, Professor of History, University of Cincinnati
Using material from his book, Dr. Durrill will discuss how the Civil War dragged a prosperous Southern community into a “war of another kind,” where civilian residents fought a destructive battle with each other.All programs in the series will be held at the Main Library in the Genealogy & Local History Program Space on the 3rd Floor of the South Building. The best place to park is the Garfield Place Parking Garage on 9th Street (left side) right past the Vine Street intersection. You can park all day on Saturdays at this facility for $2.00.
