SUMMARY OF THE PRINCIPAL EVENTS.

Jan. 11, 1862.-The Burnside Expedition sails from Hampton Roads for North carolina coast.

March 8-9, 1862.-Naval engagement in Hampton Roads, Va., and destruction of the U. S. frigate Congress and sloop-of-war Cumberland by the Confederate iron-clad Virginia (formerly the Merrimac).

17, 1862.-Embarkation of the Army of the Potomac of the Peninsula commenced at Alexandria.

It was the intention and constant effort of the Department and contractors that the Monitors should be completed in the month of January, but there was delay in consequence of difficulties incident to an undertaking of such novelty and magnitude, and there were also some slight defects, which were, however, promptly remedied, and she left New York early in March, reaching Hampton Roads on the night of the 8th.
