canal, and sounding at intervals of 18 feet to 15 feet depth of water in the river at upper end of canal, I find 15, 12, 11, 12, 10, 10 1/2, 9 1/2, 9, 10, 9 1/2, 9, 9, 9 1/4, 9, 7 1/2, 6, 6, 5, 5, 4, 3 1/2, 3 1/2, 3 1/2, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2, 4, 4 1/2, 5, 7, 10, 15. Add 3 1/2 feet to all these sounding for depth at daily high tide, and 8 feet for depth at highest water during recent freshest in James River. One hundred and fifty feet of the shallowest part is, at low tide, 53 feet wide on surface of water in narrowest place.
