Division commanders will hold themselves in readiness to move at very brief notice, with six days' rations on hand, the meat ration being two of salt beef and four of fresh beef on the hoof, respecting the collection of which instructions have been given to the chief commissary of subsistence of the corps. No orders, however, for any change in the usual issue of rations to the troops will be made until further instructions from these headquarters.

In the event of any movement taking place orders similar to those issued December 7, 184, will be promulgated in respect to ammunition, supplies, and trains to accompany the troops. All other trains will be sent to the rear within the lines at City Point.

Special orders will be given the commanding officer First Division in relation to the disposition of the troops that will be designated to hold the entrenchments where his division is now posted. Rations and ammunition as specified on a former occasion will be supplied to them.

GENERAL: Having learned that the new Fort Fisher is in such condition as to require that an infantry force sufficient for its defense should be assigned to it, the commanding general desire that you will please make such assignment of additional troops to the fort ass will increase its garrison to 300 privates, and that you report who is in command ofthe garrison.
