Chief of Artillery, Army of the Potomac:

GENERAL: I have the honor to report that at about 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon a section of the Sixth Maine Battery, Captain Rogers, opened upon a large working party of the enemy, compelling them to leave. At about.30 p. m. that 30-pounder Parrots in Fort McGilvery opened upon a working party to the left of the Goose Neck (rebel) battery; after firing a few rounds it was vigorously replied to by the five guns in Goose Neck, and all the mortar batteries bearing upon that fort . Their fire was returned by all the guns in Battery T and Fort McGilvery. The firing continued about three hours. I have no casualties to report among the artillery and but two killed and four wounded among the infantry. At about 3 o'clock the enemy opened fire to the front of Fort Stedman and Battery 10; they were replied to by the Nineteenth New York Battery, but very little damage was done by the enemy's fire.
