Major General Carl Schurz, U. S. Volunteers, has been ordered to report to you to aid in recruiting your corps with especial reference to his operating for this purpose in the Northwest. If, when the organiation of the corps is completed, you should prefer some other officer to command, General Schurz can be assigned to duty elsewhere.

COLONEL: Two of the most notorious guerrillas, Augustine and Cox, were reported to be in Prince William. I sent a scout of First Michigan Cavalry after them last night, and their dead bodies have just been brought in. They were clothed in our cavalry uniform.
