Nothing unusual transpired along our lines. The enemy built some sharpshooter posts opposite right of our line, but these were knocked down by Numbers 9. In the evening a report was, received that the commanding officer of the gun-boat Commodore Perry excepted a torpedo-boat down the Appomattox. The Perry is above that pontoon bridge. The greatest vigilance was ordered on the river front, but nothing unusual occurred.

The firing was commenced by our people opening Numbers 5 upon a train of cars on Richmond and Petersburg Railroad. The enemy replied from Chesterfield, Goose Neck, and their several mortar battery in front of the line from Stedman to our right.
