Four deserters from Gracie's brigade have just come in; report that the enemy's pickets retired to their main line, which crosses Hatcher's Run at Burgess' Mill, extending along the Boydton plank road about a quarter of a mile and there crosses it. It was reported on their picket-line that Pickett's division had gone into position on Johnson's right.

Hays' division has reached the Crow house and extends to within 200 yards of Hatcher's Run. Turner's division, of Twenty-fourth Corps, is on the right of Hays, and will form on the right, extending down the run, and will be virtually in connection with our artillery in the entrenchments. The enemy has some artillery on the other side of the run, with woods cleared, so as to cover the field of the Crow house. The Third and First Division have moved forward through dense undergrowth and swamps and the connecting is somewhat broken. I do not exactly know where Miles' ;eft touches the Boydton plank, but am about to
