General Prince reports from Captain Ford, commanding cavalry, that the enemy are throwing out a large force of infantry upon my right flank on the Raccoon Ford road. I am making dispositions accordingly.

GENERAL: The head of my column has not yet reached the point where the Raccoon Ford road intersects the Orange and Fredericksburg plank road. I wrote that the head of the Fifth Corps and the head of Gregg's cavalry met at Parker's Store. Gregg has been skirmishing with the enemy some time and his progress is slow. I will not move beyond the road running from this one to Robertson's Tavern until I hear from you, as there is no other going to the pike ladi down on the map ahead of where I now am.
Greg, at last accounts, was skirmishing with cavalry. They opened with artillery, also a few shell. Ought he to push beyond Verdierville, if he can get there, and shall I go there, if the road is open to that point?

Commanding Third Corps:
Your dispatch of 11.45 is received. The major-general commanding directs that you attack the enemy in your front immediately, throwing your left forward so as to connect with General Warren at Robertson's Tavern. The object of the attack is to form a junction with General Warren, which must be effected immediately.

I had only halted to find the road, and depended upon the reports of the division commanders, assisted as well as my staff could.
