GENERAL: You will quietly withdraw your troops from their present position and take up a position back near where your headquarters were before you advanced yesterday afternoon. On your way down report to the general commanding in person. Commence the movement at once.

GENERAL: You will quietly withdraw your troops from their present position and mass them in the field in rear of this house, leaving your pickets undisturbed until further orders.

GENERAL: Immediately after the withdrawal of General Birney's troops, you will withdraw from your present position and mass on the road near this house. This withdrawal must be done very quietly. The pickets will remain on their present line until further orders.

On the withdrawal of the Sixth Corps I proceeded to take line of battle, the better to secure my line of communications on a new position, but there being no indications of the enemy in my front (he having left his head and wounded and hospitals behind), I have come up to the rear of Sedgwick, where I am massing.
