Colonel FERGUSON,

Commanding Jenkins' Cavalry:

COLONEL: The major- general commanding directs that you proceed to this place and thence to Pocahontas County and establish your command at or near Marling's Bottom, wherever in the immediate vicinity you can find forage for your horses.

In case you have turned on to the Staunton and Parkersburg turnpike in the direction of Monterey, you will continue to that place; otherwise you will proceed according to the instructions contained above.

In either event, the major- general commanding directs that your command be established near Marling's Bottom until further orders, as soon as your prosent movement is completed.

General A. E. Jackson, at Jonesborough, telegraphs for re- enforcements, and says:

The enemy, in large force, are advancing on Knoxville. On their return, I apprehend they will come this way.

In view of the above, the major- general commanding directs that you will be on the alert.
