COLONEL: By direction of the major-general commanding, I inform you that orders have been given for the disposition of General Jenkins' brigade as follows, viz: One regiment at Little Levels, Pocahontas, one near Lewisburg, and one to report to Colonel McCausland. Witcher's battalion reports to the general at Zollicoffer, East Tennessee.

Report a Dublin with your regiment, with the least possible delay. Be ready to take the cars for Saltville. When can you get here? Reply at once, that transportation may be ordered. Lose no time. Send the accompanying dispatch to Colonel McCausland by special courier.

Colonel McCAUSLAND,

Commanding Brigade:

The enemy are so vigorously pressing General Jones and with such superior force, while they threaten Saltville also, that the Sixtieth Regiment has been ordered to Saltville immediately.

You must do the best you can with your remaining force, and the Eighth Virginia Cavalry; another regiment of General Jenkins' brigade, is on its way to you. Be on your guard and fall back if necessary to the Narrows and Rocky Gap, or either of those places, as may be best under the circumstances.

Will order a company of First Brigade to Narrows as a guard. The emergency is pressing. Promptness and watchfulness were never more needed.
