SUMMARY OF THE PRINCIPAL EVENTS.*
January 26, 1863.-Major General Joseph Hooker, U. S. Army, supersedes Major General Ambrose E. Burnside in command of the Army of the Potomac; Major General Darius N. Couch supersedes Major General Edwin V. Sumner in command of the Right Grant Division; Major General George G. Meade assumes command of the Center Grant Division; Major General Oliver O. Howard supersedes Major General John Sedgwick in command of the Second Army Corps, and Brigadier General Charles Griffin temporarily in command of the Fifth Army Corps.

26-27, 1863.-Skirmishes near Fairfax Court-House and at Middleburg, Va.
30, 1863.-Skirmish at Turner's Mills, Va.
31, 1863.-Tenth Army Corps ordered to the Department of Virginia.
February 1, 1863.-Major General George Sykes, U. S. Army, temporarily in command of the Fifth Army Corps.
2, 1863.-The Department of Washington re-created, the troops constituting the Twenty-Second Army Corps.
Reconnaissance of the Rappahannock fords, and skirmish at Rappahannock Station, Va.
4, 1863.-Major General John Sedgwick, U. S. Army, supersedes Major General William F. Smith in command of the Sixth Army Corps.
5, 1863-The Grand Divisions, Army of the Potomac, abolished, and commanders (major-generals) assigned to army corps as follows:
John F. Reynolds, First; Darius N. Couch, Second; Daniel E. Sickles, Third; George G. Meade, Fifth; John Sedgwick, Sixth; William F. Smith, Ninth; Frans Sigel, Eleventh; Henry W Slocum, Twelfth; and George Stoneman to command the cavalry.
5-7, 1863.-Operations at Rappahannock Bridge and Grove Church, Va.
5-8, 1863.-Scout from Camp Piatt into Wyoming Country, W. Va.
6, 1863.-Skirmish at Dranesville, Va.
Skirmish at or near Millwod, Va.
Skirmish at Wiggenton's Mills, Aquia Creek, Va.
