I have just received intelligence of the capture, by a detachment of my forces under the immediate command of Lieutenant Colonel George E. Currie, of 3 rebel officers and a number of privates, $2,200,000 in Confederate funds, and very important rebel dispatches, all of which are now at Cairo. I would, in the absence of Major-General Grant, request instructions respecting the immediate disposition of the rebel dispatches, &c.

SIR: Allow me the honor to report the capture of 6 additional Confederate prisoners; also 7 horses and 1 mule, in addition to prisoners above named were captured west of Bayou Macon, and are a portion of a company of 25 engaged in keeping open a line of communication between the east and west. I have every reason to believe I will be able to break them up within the next ten days, as I have captured 9 out of 35.
