HEADQUARTERS, Jeffcoats Bridge, February 12, 1865. MAJOR: I ran a piece of artillery into the swamp and drove the enemy on both sides of the road into the swamp. As soon as I with- drew the piece the enemy crossed over a large force. - I am satisfied from all I learn they are flanking me, and will consequently retire at dark, notifying Colonel Dibrell of it, and also Colonel Carter. The road to Orangeburg passes very near the swamp, and will be in the hands of the enemy as soon as I retirea I hope I am not withdrawing too soon, but think the safety of my command depends on my action. The Fourteenth Corps was crossing at Walls Ferry last evening, that corps being on the left. Kilpatrick is now at Rock- iiigham. General Wheeler killed ten of his men a few hours ago, and drove the rest close up to the town. I shall get everything together
