Should you find that the troops on the Binnaker's road have been driven back, and that the enemy cannot be held at Snake or Cooper's Swamp, you will cross the North Edisto at Rowe's Bridge, and hold it to cross troops from Branchville. There is a line of couriers from Branchville to this place. In case the enemy cannot be driven back, and it should be necessary to fall back on this place, do so slowly, checking the enemy as long as possible. Keep your men well in hand; communicate wiith me often and freely. If you are compelled to retire hold Cooper's Swamp with sufficient force, and move the remainder of
