Richmond was occupied by General Weitzel at 9 o'clock on Monday morning. Grant took Petersburg the night previous. I have just arrived here from Washington, being ordered by General Grant to report to you.

The boat is just in from Roanoke Island and brings information that both Richmond and Petersburg have fallen, and thatGrant has taken 25,000 prisoners and 500 guns.

Keep you construction force at work here in North Carolina till I have official news of General Grant. If Richmond is taken, of which I have no doubt, we will not need the Norfolk road, but will at once work up to Raleigh and beyond. Hold your force ready for the extension to Raleigh from Goldsborough. Let repairs go on on both the New Berne and Wilmington branches.
