Stoneman with force 4,000 strong, was reported at Patterson's Factory, on Yadkin River west of Salisbury, last night. This morning at 9. 30 o'clock lost current from Charlotte; supposed have struck road below Salisbury, making way for this point. We have no force to meet them this side.

Have a battery of artillery ready for transportation by rail to Salisbury, N. C., to meet of the enemy. Transportation is ordered and the troops should be at the depot so that no time may be lost.

Salisbury:

Colonel Hoke reports a column of 3,000 of the enemy moving east in Caldwell County. You must assemble all forces in your vicinity to meet it. Governor Vance will send all his disposable force, and I shall collect and forward all detachments, including a battery of artillery. You will assume command of the whole and make all disposition to defeat the enemy's purpose. Should any troops be passing, you will call on them for temporary assistance. Keep me fully advised.
