Scouts report enemy 4,000 strong, with four pieces of artillery, Stoneman commanding; left Mount Airy on 3rd instant in direction of Wytheville, crossing at Fancy Gap. I have ordered all troops here to Smithfield. Shelley's brigade is at Danville.
