General GRANT:

General Haynie has at Trenton about 1,000 men at Humboldt 475; Colonel Lawler has 1,000 men just returning from pursuits. General Brayman has two regiments Fuller's brigade, Forty-third Illinois, Twelfth Michigan, Fiftieth Indiana. I have two regiments of Fuller's brigade and scattering forces at Bethel, Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Illinois and one battery at Bolivar, one section with Haynie, one with Lawler; balance here.

Sullivan is calling for more troops to drive the rebels our of the north part of Tennessee.

I have notified him that I will send four regiments if he will send cars. You may hold then in readiness from your command to embark on arrival of cars.

Brigadier General J. E. SMITH, Davis' Mill:

Send one brigade of your command to Moscow, leaving one regiment between La Grange and Moscow. Instructions will be sent for the repairs to the road. They should start the mill at Moscow and father all the forage and supplies possible. Send with this brigade such portion of the pioneer corps formed by General Ross as you have with you.

Assume command of all the forces at La Grange, Grand Junction, and Davis' Mill, and you will retain command of them at any other point to which they may be sent for duty. The balance of the division will be returned as soon as Forrest is driven out of West Tennessee.

The regiment ordered to occupy the road between La Grange and Moscow may go on to Moscow to hold the bridge at that place until
