I. Brigadier General John C. Moore will assume command of all troops in that part of the District of the Tennessee which is south of a line drawn east and west through Booneville. He will establish his headquarters at Tupelo. All officers commanding posts or troops within the limits above defined will report to him and obey his orders.

General Price, telegraphing from Iuka 14th, desires me to inform you that he marched from Guntown on 11th to attack Rosecrans, who was understood to be at Iuka with about 10,000 men. Rosecrans retreated westward on 12th, leaving rear guard of about 1,500 men, who evacuated the place Saturday night, abandoning several hundred thousand dollars' worth of army stores. Our cavalry entered Iuka daylight Sunday. From General Bragg on 12th, near Glasgow, Ky., I learn that Rosecrans and part of his army was at Nashville.

General STERLING PRICE:

From telegram, don't know exactly where you are. I propose that you move toward Rienzi and send cavalry out to meet my scouts. I will move in that direction in a few days, or as soon as my wagons are up. With scouts out we will make junction west of Corinth not far from Pocahontas. Enemy at Bolivar 12,000 or 15,000. Must try and prevent junction with Rosecrans. Enemy receiving re-enforcements ar Memphis (new levies). Campaign in West Tennessee imperative and necessary to Bragg. Send reply at once and let us understand. Will write.

I telegraphed you immediately, proposing a combined movement upon Corinth, and sent the dispatch by special messenger to Guntown, with instructions to forward it to you immediately and to await your reply.
