To send re-enforcements from here to General Pemberton would require the evacuation of Middle Tennessee. The enemy in our front if now largely superior in numbers. Immense supplies of subsistence would be sacrificed. General Pemberton telegraphs to-day the enemy concentrating on his front at Grant Junction. I send a large cavalry force under Forrest to create a diversion by assailing their rear and communications in West Tennessee. Have sent 3,000 muskets to General Pemberton. Have received no orders extending my command.
