Is it the desire of the Department that the designations now used by Generals Van Dorn and Price, "Army of West Tennessee" and "Army of the West," should be continued to be used? Should it not be styled "Army of North Mississippi"? Please answer. It is important that this be settled.

The designations given to Generals Van Dorm's and Price's commands are improper. They should properly be styled "First and Second Army Corps of the Department of the Mississippi," under your command. In your personal absence both should be under the command of the senior officer present for duty.
