Enemy advancing from Mississippi River fired with artillery at pickets near mouth of Coldwater. Cavalry had better return. Reported crossing Tallahotchie with cavalry at sundown this evening. I will send the Tobytubby cavalry to that point.

General Holmes informs me he cannot send a man from his army, but will send Sibley's cavalry brigade from Texas. That will help Vicksburg but little; to save it I shall compelled to withdrawn from Tallahatchie unless General Bragg co-operates at once with me.

Has General Holmes replied to your dispatch? I am disappointed by a renewed attempt to withdraw Sibley's brigade from the special service for which it was designed, and a refusal to send a man when he asks from an addition of 20,000 muskets to his previous supply.
