Rumors are rife that a rebel force are to attack this town to-night. I have thirty "Spencers," with good men behind them to defend it. Taking all things into consideration, with the movement of the sympathizers, the rumor has some foundation.

COLONEL: Inclosed find copy of letter of instructions* from General Burbridge, which you will be governed by, if it should become necessary for General Ewing to use your regiment. Please give me notice of the duty, &c. You will make your regular reports to these headquarters. We had some little excitement in the eastern part of the State. I think and believe that there will be no formidable invasion. Let me hear from your command often.
