HEADQUARTERS DETACHMENT ARMY OF THE TENNESSEE, Granny White Pike, December 17, 1864-7.30 a. m.

Brigadier General J. McARTHUR,
Commanding First Division:

The major-general commanding directs that you move your command out on the Granny White pike at 8 a. m., you taking the advance; the Second and Third Divisions will follow you; and after them, the Twenty-third Corps. Move out the Granny White pike to Brentwood, where you will connect with the Fourth Corps and others, the whole army, when united, to march on Franklin. The wagon trains will follow the troops, in the order of precedence, on the Franny White pike. You will cover the march as far as Brentwood with a strong body of skirmishers, passing over the hills to the east of and bordering the road.
