The major-general commanding directs me to forward the above copy of a dispatch* sent last night, inasmuch as he has received no answer thereto as yet. He also directs me to say that he is extremely desirous to have you destroy Bear Creek bridge, if possible. Major General A. J. Smith is in Pulaski to-day, and will start with his command early to-morrow morning for the Tennessee River and Eastport, which latter it is hoped he will be able to reach before the enemy.

General Long will draw horses and equipments for the One hundred and twenty-third Illinois and a portion for use of Seventeenth Indiana to-day; will start for Nashville, via Bardstown, to-morrow, the 28th. Two regiments, Third Ohio Cavalry and Ninety-eighth Illinois, were sent to Bardstown Sunday, 25th, to intercept General Lyon.

This is done that you may furnish the troops of your command more recent, as well as more reliable, intelligence concerning operations in Georgia than that imparted to them during the late campaign in Tennessee.
