GENERAL: The major-general has just received information that the Yankees have placed a pontoon between one and two miles above town. Lieutenant-Colonel Taylor is now fighting them. About 200 have crossed on this side. The major-general is not here at this time. I have, however, sent him the information, and presume he will call and see you.

Commanding Carter's Regiment of Scouts:
General Hood directs that you continue to gather stock, as heretofore directed, but that you at the same time scout the country in the direction of Shelbyville and Fayetteville, and between those points and this place, keeping in communication with General Forrest, to whom you will report any movements of the enemy. General Forrest is now near Columbia. You will report with your command when he retires to Tennessee River. General Forrest will notify you when to join his command.

No portion of Tyler's command was ordered back to Montgomery. He left his force at Pollard, except 175 Georgia militia, who have gone back to Georgia. General Adams left this morning for Pollard. He has some reserves at Selma waiting orders. If you wish, I can get for you from conscript officer 250 men, but you must arm and equip them. Answer, and direct where they shall report.
