My troops were yesterday in White Plains without finding any trace of the enemy. In accordance with your orders, I shall now scout the whole country from Bull Run Mountain toward Fairfax Court-House, and have ordered the rest of my command and my train to return to Fairfax, where I shall report personally to you. I will use all the cavalry I have to scour the roads, keeping none in reserve. The men captured this afternoon were taken at Hay Market. They have all been recaptured. They were pumped dry.
