GENERAL: The general commanding instructs me to say that he wishes you to send the 2,000 which he directed you to hold in readiness to Brigadier-General Liddell, so as to reach Trenton or the foot of the mountain to-morrow at dusk.

COLONEL: I have received your order to send 2,000 men to report to General Liddell at Trenton to-morrow night, which order will be complied with, but I desire to say that whenever your order troops on special service it is proper to state the amount of rations to be taken. This is indispensable in order to avoid delay. I am not presumed to know what orders have been given by the commanding general to General Liddell and what amount of rations are needed.
