4. Bvt. Major General B. H. Grierson, commanding Cavalry Forces, Military Division of West Mississippi, will proceed up the river as far as Memphis, Tenn., and, if necessary, to Cairo, Ill., for the purpose of expediting the shipment of the cavalry ordered from the Department of the Cumberland. Captain S. L. Woodward will accompany the general. On the completion of this duty they will return to this city.

The major-general commanding directs that your order Colonel Bertram to push on to D'Olive's Creek, and take a strong defensive position on its south bank, and, if possible, open communication with the gun-boats. Please march with the other two divisions to Durant's place; select your headquarters there and erect your defensive lines, occupying as much ground as possible.
