There is a detachment of sailors here intended to man a naval battery at the front. They have no transportation for their rations and camp equipage, for which it will require two teams. Shall I seize them or not?

Captain Smith's pontoon train will be kept intact. General Canby is gone to the fort. I will get his instructions in regard to the bateaux and the teams for the sailors' baggage in a few minutes.

Brigadier-General BAILEY:

The naval battery, &c., goes to General Smith. Wagons will be impressed for the rations and equipment of the sailors. The bateaux (as many as there is transportation for) will be sent with oars, &c., complete, but no balks.
