Smith has taken 300 yards of rifle-pits and 200 prisoners. Keep the rebels uneasy on your front by the fire of your guns and such demonstrations as will prevent the concentrating against Smith, and be prepared to take advantage of any opportunity that may offer.

Please order the batteries playing on the wharf at Spanish Fort to keep up during the night a continuous fire, at the rate of one shot every two minutes,; besides, you will order such demonstrative operations on your whole front as may divert the enemy's attention, and prevent his massing against the troops of the Sixteenth Corps on the extreme right and driving them from their lodgment.
