COLONEL: The major-general commanding directs that you detail an escort of twenty men, under a commissioned officer, to report on Monday morning, the 1st of May, to Mr. C. B. Smith, manager U. S. military telegraph for the District of Mobile, for the service with the telegraph party charged with the construction of a line from Mobile to East Pascagoula. Transportation will be sent for fifteen days of rations and forage, which should be held in readiness on Monday morning. Be pleased to select steady and reliable men for his service.

Colonel Cobb will receive instructions from Captain Walter McFarland, U. S. Engineers, supervising engineer officer at Mobile and Blakely.

I have the honor to request that the entrenching tools for which requisition has been made be forwarded as soon as practicable. Lieutenant-Colonel Palfrey has laid out the fort, and such progress is being made with the work as the limited number of tools in the command will admit of. My troops have an excellent camp and their health continues good. I have reliable information that Colonel Spence's cavalry are now at the State line and have pickets and scouts between them and Citronelle.
