performance of every duty devolving upon him, and in the various attacks and assaults upon the strong positions of the enemy he nobly and successfully led his command, driving the enemy from his works in confusion and utter defeat. General Beatty has been in command of troops immediately under my own observation since October 21, 1862, and I cordially and recommend his promotion for his intelligent, and able discharge of duty, for marked personal bravery in action, and for his faithful constancy and devotion to the interests and success of the army.

C., that Davis received there intelligence of the murder of President Lincoln, spoke of it, exulted at it, and expressed the wish that Vice-President Johnson should also be killed. Ascertain whether you can obtain any proof of truth of this report, and if so, forward the witnesses immediately to report to the Secretary of War.
