COLONEL: Your notes of the 16th have just been received. General Liddell directs me to inform you that he gives you authority to grant twenty-four-hour permits, but desires you to give none for forty-eight hours unless you can recall the applicant at a moment's notice. He directs me further to inform you that he is fully convinced it is the enemy's intention to advance upon us at such a time as he may be prepared, unless he meets with a disaster elsewhere which may draw him off, and, as this is hardly probable, desires you to be well on your guard, and always prepared with your whole command. Dont's lose your vigilance; he may come when you least expect him.
