Question. Do you think that Middle Tennessee was competent in the month of October to supply from the country the army we had operating there?

I think it could have supplied an army of our strength, particularly a friendly army, or an army not in a hostile country, where everything is concealed and information cannot be obtained as to where the supply is.

By General DANA:

Question. What time of day did General McCook come to General Buell's headquarters on the 8th of October?

I cannot say, sir; I think it was between 12 and 1 o'clock.

Question. About how long did he remain there?

I do not know, sir.

Question. Do you know whether firing was going on in the direction of his corps at the time he was there?

I think not, sir.

Question. Do you know whether he made any report when he arrived at headquarters that day?

I do not, sir.

Question. About what time did General McCook's aides come to General Buell's headquarters looking after him?

I think it was after 4 o'clock.

Question. Do you know whether they found him?

I do not know, sir; they did not know whether he was alive. They seemed to express great fears that he was not alive or that he had been taken prisoner. They were in a very great state of excitement themselves, and acted as though they were lost, and he and everybody else.

Question. Did General Gilbert come to headquarters on that day; and, if so, at what time?

I cannot say positively; I think he did in the afternoon.

By General SCHOEPF:

Question. You stated that you had fifteen days' rations at Nashville; were they full or half rations?

Full rations. We had a million rations at Nashville.

Question. Was that about the time the army concentrated at Nashville?

Previous to that. We were able to got that start of rations by means of the river; we could not have done it with the railroad; but when the troops were put on half rations this supply sufficed.

By the JUDGE-ADVOCATE:

Question. At the time you say you had these rations at Nashville had you any at any other place?

Stevenson was the sub-depot for the troops. The army drew from Stevenson. The depot at Stevenson was furnished from Nashville and that from Louisville.

Question. That was the only place besides Nashville at which you had any store on hand?

We had some at Huntsville, but only for a few days. We drew partly from Stevenson. We brought down some on the Nashville and Decatur road, but Stevenson was for a good part of the time considered an immediate depot.

Question. When you fell back did you bring those supplies with you?

There were some supplies destroyed at Huntsville or left there, but I do not know for a certainty. I was not there at the time.
