SIR: You have made a gallant defense of your position, and in order to prevent further bloodshed I demand and unconditional surrender. I have five regiments of infantry and one battalion of infantry sharpshooters. I have just been re-enforced by a brigade of cavalry under Colonel Scott, and also one battery of artillery. A short distance in my rear is General Bragg's army, and you cannot escape; the track has been torn up behind you on the other side of the river.*

SIR: Allow me to thank you for your compliments. Re-enforcements have arrived for me. I shall defend myself until overpowered. Your men fight gallantly. If you wish you can remove your wounded and dead. Notify me if you wish to do so. I think I can hold my position against any force you can bring; at least I will try to do so.*

COLONEL: Your note has just been received. I will accept your proposition to remove my wounded and dead, and for that purpose will take sufficient time to remove them to my hospital, which is some 2 miles in my rear, and will notify you when I have removed them. I will set about the work at once.
