GENERAL: The major-general commanding directs me to say that he wishes Powell's Valley constantly scoured with cavalry and every approach carefully watched to prevent a recurrence of surprises by the enemy like that at Wallace's Cross-Roads. The enemy should be kept in close to the Gap. General McCown telegraphs to-day that he as it from two sources the enemy are in Sequatchie Valley, moving in the direction of Dunlap and Pikeville.

General McCown telegraphs nothing but a scouting party in Sequatchie Valley. The taking of Murfreesborough confirmed. I advised you by letter sent by freight train this morning that Captain Owen reported the four regiments of Federal infantry from Wallace's Cross-Roads had crossed the river, going toward Big Creek Gap.
