considered as temporary and no expense incurred for building, as the troops under your command are regarded as in the field. I beg of you to enforce the most rigid economy in all the departments. Of course the necessary expenditures, such as are authorized for the troops in campaign, must be made; nothing further.

Second Infantry California Volunteers, Commanding Fort Lyon:

CAPTAIN: You are directed immediately on receipt of this to proceed to a ppoint near the head of Larrabee's Creek, about one miles east of Painter's ranch, with as many men of your command as can be spared from the service of trhe post for the purpose of capturing a band of Indians reported to be concealed there. The bearer of this, Mr. Fairfield, offers to guide the detachment to the spot. If you think proper you are authorized to detach Lieutenant Dobbins in command of the expedition instead of taking command in person.
