SIR: The department commander has read with interest your letter relative to operations in your district, and is pleased with the activity and zeal displayed byyourself and the officers and men under your command. ++ Your regimental quartermaster will receive instructions through Lieutenant-Colonel Babbitt to purchase the mules (seventy-five) required. The general desires you to send to Benicia the Third Infantry companies, now in the Humbolt District, as fast as you can relieve them with the companies of your own regiment. The companiesof your regiment still in the District of Oregon will join you so soon as they can be relieved.
